Mary, Mother of God
Tuesday, January 1

Numbers 6:22-27
Psalm 67:2-8
Galatians 4:4-7
Luke 2:16-21

On this first day of the New Year the Church invites us to pray with Mary the Mother of God.

The readings for today’s liturgy point to Mary as the woman through whom God’s Son is born; the woman through whom God looks upon us with kindness and blesses us. The Gospel reminds us of the stable scene when the shepherds greet Jesus and are filled with joy!

We can say that to be the Mother of God is Mary’s vocation. Mary’s role of Mother of God was a lifetime commitment to a very special relationship
with the Son of God.

It was from Mary that Jesus’ human body was formed. It was Mary who made his infant years safe. It was Mary who clothed and fed and cared for Jesus. It was she who taught him to speak and guided his first steps. In her mother’s heart she pondered and prayed for her son. And, most of this was done in what remains to us a hidden life.

Mary holds a special place in the lives of the Daughters of Charity, designated by St. Louise as the only Mother of Company. We are also blessed with all that Mary revealed to Saint Catherine, especially that she is ready to bestow blessings on all who ask for them.

Consider today the blessings that you are drawn to ask of Mary. Include in your prayers that Mary continue to bless the Company and draw other young women to join us in continuing the work of her Son on earth.
