"Leaving God for God" is a phrase cherished by the Daughters of Charity who seek to integrate their lives of prayer and union with God with the service they give to those in need.

The phrase goes back to the early conferences between St. Vincent and the Daughters of Charity. St. Vincent was stressing the importance of service to those in need, saying that sometimes-even during prayer-a Daughter may be called to serve the poor. He taught the Daughters to see the face of Christ in the poor. Therefore, they would be "leaving God for God."

The Daughters believe that the manner in which service is rendered is as important as the help that is given. Because they see the face of Christ in those they serve, the Daughters can assist the poor with dignity and respect. They strive to share this fundamental aspect of their charism with those who assist them in their service to the poor.
